Local SEO Plan for Busy Aussie Tradies and Small Businesses

If you are running a local business, chances are you’re bloody brilliant at what you do. Whether that’s fixing a leaking pipe, baking the perfect sourdough, or running an accounting practice. But when it comes to “local SEO strategies for small businesses,” you might feel like pulling your hair out.
Who has the time to sit in front of a computer analysing data when you’ve got customers waiting, tools to pack, or a family that wants to see you before 8 PM?
The reality is that 46% of all Google searches are looking for something local. If you aren’t visible, you are literally handing cash to your competitors. Here is the dead-simple, low-resource blueprint to lock down your local market.
1. Own Your Piece of Google (For Free)
The single most important thing you can do is claim your Google Business Profile (it used to be called Google My Business). Over half of all local businesses haven’t even claimed theirs.
- The 15-Minute Fix: Go to Google Maps, find your business, and click “Claim this business.”
- Fill It Out Completely: Put in your exact phone number, trading hours, and an actual description of what you do.
- The Golden Rule: Use your real business name. Don’t stuff it full of random words like “Best Plumber Ever Sydney” if your business name is just “J&C Plumbing.” Google will penalize you.
- Snap Pics on the Go: Got a finished job? Cleaned up a beautiful shop front? Take a quick photo on your phone and upload it straight to your profile. Google loves active profiles, and so do customers.
2. Talk Like a Local (Location-Specific Keywords)
When people use Google or talk to their phone using voice search, they don’t search for “electrician.” They search for “sparky near Manly” or “emergency electrician Northern Beaches.”
To win these customers, you need to use location-specific keywords on your website.
- Instead of writing “We offer commercial cleaning services,” write “We offer commercial cleaning services across Parramatta and Western Sydney.”
- Put your main suburb and surrounding service areas right in your website’s main headings and footer.
3. Build Your Online “Street Cred” (Citations and Backlinks)
Think of a local citation as an online phone book listing. Google checks these to make sure you’re a real, legitimate business.
- Get Listed on Aussie Directories: Make sure your Business Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) are exactly the same across your website, Facebook, True Local, Yellow Pages, and Local search.
- Score Local Backlinks: A backlink is just another website linking to yours. Sponsor a local junior footy club, get listed on your local business chamber website, or ask a local supplier to link to you. Google sees these local links as a massive vote of confidence.
The Low-Time Reality Check: You don’t need to spend 10 hours a week on this. Spend just one hour this Friday setting up your Google Business Profile and adding your details to two local directories.
Once it’s done, it works for you in the background while you’re out on the tools. But don’t forget to update this regularly, hey spend 60 minutes at the end of the month, using AI, drafting content and updating things which will bring you some local leads.
